Etkiyap Measures Social Impact of Turkish Grameen Microfinance Program

Etkiyap continues to support the spread of the Social Return on Investment (SROI) approach in Turkey by undertaking the social value and SROI analysis of the Turkish Grameen Microfinance Program (TGMP).

Since the day TGMP was launched in 2003, it has opened the way for nearly 200,000 low-income women to participate in working life as productive individuals by providing microcredit in the amount of more than 1 billion liras. The material, moral and business gains of women who benefit from microcredit in this process have provided many benefits to their own lives, their families, the education of their children, and their neighbors.

The microfinance fund of 120 million TRY, distributed to 50,000 low-income women in 2019, is provided through the repayments and donations of the women benefiting from the program. At this point, it is important for the sustainability of the program to measure the impact of TGMP’s various credits, its model that makes its users successful, and other services on women, other stakeholders and society, and to determine the economic value of this impact.

The contributions of the social value and SROI analysis to be carried out by the SROI experts of Etkiyap to TGMP will be as follows:

  • Contributing individuals, institutions and organizations clearly understand the impact of the program on stakeholders and society beyond the outputs, and they begin to see their contributions as an investment rather than a grant. This will enable existing donations to continue to increase and new individuals and institutions to start contributing.,
  • The TGMP Board of Directors and its employees are motivated and proud by clearly seeing the impact and economic value of the services they provide on women and society. This has a positive impact on employee satisfaction and loyalty.
  • During the impact analysis, the efficiency of the processes and areas for improvement are revealed. TGMP can benefit from this information in its strategic planning.

TGMP has taken the first step in impact measurement and communication by collecting and publishing detailed data on its outputs. In addition, in the success stories they created based on the experiences of its active users, they went beyond the outputs and started to talk about the results and impact of the program. Social value and Social Return on Investment analysis aims to bring all these together to form a comprehensive theory of change, to explain the results and impact of the program based on this theory, and to evaluate it economically.
